Johnny Sorrow was originally a silent movie star whose career ended when the talkies arrived. Taking to crime he clashed with the original Justice Society. During one of his schemes Sorrow wore an experimental subspace prototype that allowed him to phase in and out at will. The teenage Sand fired a grappling hook at Sorrow striking the subspace device Sorrow wore. The Device malfunctioned and tore Sorrow to pieces. His remains were dragged into dimensions known as the Subtle Realms; there an entity known as the King Of Tears saved Sorrow. The King Of Tears crafted a mask that acted as a vessel for the new form of Sorrow, the mask allowed Sorrow to appear on Earth once again. Sorrow went to see his wife Andrea only to inadvertently kill her when he removed his mask and revealed his new form. Sorrow now seeks to destroy the JSA and Sand and allow the entry of The King Of Tears into this dimension.
