Philip Reardon served in the U.S. Special Forces in Vietnam, and was honorably discharged after being hit between the eyes by a grenade fragment. Returning to civilian life he became a warehouse guard. One night thieves knocked him out and set a bomb to blow open the warehouse safe. Batman II arrived on the scene, but Reardon revived and, his vision blurred from being hit on the head, mistook him for one of the thieves. They clashed and Reardon finally recognized Batman before the bomb exploded. The explosion aggravated his war injury and burned out his retinas. The brilliant Dr. Engstrom re-connected his optic nerves to his fingertips, enabling him to see through them. Blaming Batman for his injury, he adopted the identity of the Ten-Eyed Man and sought vengeance |
