Varnae was the first vampire created by the Darkhold, as such he is able to control all other vampires. As a vampire, Varnae is a member of the living dead, virtually immortal and only able to be destroyed by direct sunlight, piercing of his heart, beheading, burning and scattering of his ashes, or using the magic Montesi Formula spell. Religious objects can harm him but he only fears religious icons from his time as a human; Crosses and other religious icons whose faiths he predates cause him no harm and have no effect on him. He is also bound from entering any dwelling unless invited, and he feels the need to break any mirror he encounters. Most significantly, Varnae is dependant on consuming human blood every night.

Hypnotism and Mind Control: Like all vampires, Varnae has the ability to hypnotise most beings just by making eye contact with them for a few seconds. While under his influence, he can force people to do his bidding, though beings of great will power can resist him.
Acute Senses: Varnae 's senses of sight, smell, and hearing are enhanced to superhuman levels.
Regenerative Healing Factor: Like all vampires, Varnae can rapidly regenerate damaged or destroyed bodily tissues faster and more efficiently than an ordinary human.

Varnae's hold is particularly strong over other vampires that he himself has been responsible for creating. Varnae can also use his telepathy to mentally communicate with or control certain animals, such as bats or wolves.
b>Magic: Varnae is a magician of unknown potency. He was a member of the Darkholder order in pre-cataclysm Atlantis meaning that he has access to some of the power of Chthon.

Origins:

Varnae was a sorcerer dwelling in pre-cataclysmic Atlantis, who extensively studied the necromantic arts. He apparently schemed to usurp the rule of the benevolent Vishanti mystic trinity’s Agamotto, who served as Earth’s protector (later referred to as Sorcerer Supreme), Circa 19, 000 BC, conflicts broke out again between the surviving Elder Gods, Chthon, Gaea, Oshtur and Set, and Agamotto gathered the era’s greatest sorcerer’s in Atlantis. Varnae attended the summit of Elder Gods’ avatars, one of several representing Chthon, though the summit resolved very little. Five hundred years later, Varnae was gravely wounded by Atalnti’s King Kull. The king’s war against wizards has also brought about the mortal death of necromantic sorcerer Thulsa Doom, one of the last of the Elder Race, which preceded humanity in dominion over the Earth. Varnae and other Thulsa Doom followers, have obtained the powerful Cthon Scrolls (which would later become the Darkhold tome), vengefully plotted to transform some of their number into supernatural creatures to destroy Kull. The dying Varnae was the first to volunteer to be transformed, and the “Darkholders” performed the incantations as he perished, though several followed soon after, such as Lamia, Verdelet and allegedly boy, Maracen and Saracen. Three days after the spell, these subjects rose anew as what would come to be known as vampires. When one of the wizards attempted to command him, Varnae consumed him and then Varnae and the other vampires fed on the entire sorcerer’s blood, with all those slain by the vampires becoming vampires in turn. These generally proved to be the less wilful creatures the sorcerers had intended, and Varnae revelled in the worship as lord of the vampires for centuries.
