Dr. Phillip Hayes owned the Oscorp subsidiary Phelcorp Labs, a firm specializing in gene therapy. When one of his employees, Sara Ehret, had a lab accident on his watch and ended up in a coma, Hayes lost his funding. To keep Phelcorps going, he turned to crime, taking the dormant identity of the masked crime-lord the Rose. Whether by coercion or financial transaction, he acquired the sweat glands of the Corruptor, using them to develop the inhibition-lowering street drug Ebony; he also somehow granted himself the ability to control users of the drug. |
