Bedlam was a convicted murderer sitting in a Nova Scotia prison when James MacDonald Hudson using a device that located people with latent mutant powers found him. At the time Hudson was being pressured for results with his "super-powers" program. James had the prisoner released and worked on causing his powers to manifest themselves.
James Hudson hadnít realized how successful heíd been. Bedlam, as the being now called itself, had mutated in form and developed fearsome psionic powers. He ambushed Guardian and Wolverine and came close to killing them both. Only desperate action by Guardian drove Bedlam into unconsciousness. Guardian sealed Bedlam into a life-supporting cocoon and locked the labís door forever. In disgust over Hudsonís experiment, Wolverine left and eventually joined the X-Men.
Yearís later, Canadian intelligence agent Gary Cody stumbled across Bedlamís existence. He thought the creature could be used to keep Alpha Flight in line; he was wrong. Bedlam destroyed Codyís mind and fled.
